The Consortium is pleased to announce the premiere of its latest video in the “Voices of Change” series. The story of Joe Benedum Trees (1931-2011) is told by three individuals who joyfully and lovingly cared for him at his Treesdale Manor home. The video interview can be found on the Consortium’s website.
Joe was known as strong, friendly, playful, and a lover of the outdoors. Diagnosed with intellectual disability and autism, he grew up in an era when very few disability services were available. His parents – Edith Lahm and Joseph Clifton Trees – had the financial means to provide for their son’s support needs throughout his life. After their passing, Joe lived with caregivers at Treesdale Manor until his death in 2011 at the age of 79.
Today, the trust fund set up for Joe’s lifelong care provides financial support to numerous Western Pennsylvania organizations that serve people with disabilities.
