We are deeply saddened to share the passing of John L. Tague, Jr., a longtime disability rights advocate, founding leader of the Western Pennsylvania Disability History and Action Consortium, and cherished member of our disability community.

Friends will be received on Monday, June 15, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Savolskis-Wasik-Glenn Funeral Home in Munhall.

John served as the Consortium’s first Project Director, helping to lay the groundwork for preserving and honoring the history of disability rights advocacy in Western Pennsylvania. In later years, he served on the Consortium’s Executive Committee and remained deeply involved in shaping the organization’s mission and direction. His leadership, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to disability justice helped shape the work that continues today.

Beyond the Consortium, John dedicated decades of his life to disability rights advocacy and community leadership. He served on numerous local and state boards and commissions, including the Governor’s Cabinet and Advisory Committee on People with Disabilities, the City-County Task Force on Disabilities, and the Pittsburgh Human Relations Commission.

A longtime transit and accessibility advocate, John also served on the Board of the Port Authority of Allegheny County and the Board of Action Housing. Throughout his life, he championed the Independent Living Philosophy and worked tirelessly to ensure people with disabilities could fully participate in community life.

John’s impact on our region and disability community will be long remembered. He will be deeply missed, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, caregivers, and the many people whose lives he touched through his advocacy and service.
