From Wrongs to Rights

The logo of the “From Wrongs to Rights” logo uses the tagline, “Celebrating yesterday’s heroes and tomorrow’s leaders of disability advocacy.”

A digital archive documenting the efforts of parents, journalists and advocates in the early 1970s to gain rights for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The effort increased public understanding and moved Pennsylvania and the nation to guarantee the right to education and the provision of home- and community-based services.

The “From Wrongs to Rights” website, sponsored by the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, details the advocacy effort to expose problems of overcrowding, understaffing and seclusion in state-run and state-funded institutions, including Polk State School and Hospital in Venango County. The website includes an 8-minute video about the advocacy effort.
