In April 2025, Slippery Rock University announced the naming of its mobility equipment simulation lab after long-time volunteer Molly Merhaut.

The Molly Merhaut Simulation Lab provides physical therapy doctoral students with hands-on experience with adaptive equipment used by people with mobility disabilities, and the opportunity to interact with volunteers who have physical disabilities.

Molly Merhaut, who has cerebral palsy, has been a simulation volunteer in the lab for more than a decade. She typically meets with students two hours weekly, providing information about her experience with mobility equipment and enabling students to gain confidence in using equipment and interacting with simulation patients.

The lab was founded by Dr. Barbara Billik-Sawhney PT, DPT about 12 years ago, with oversight continuing from by Dr. James Eng PT, DPT. The lab is now overseen by Dr. Victoria Kochick PT, DPT.

An article about Ms. Merhaut’s work with SRU physical therapy students appeared on the department’s website in 2021.

“I feel truly valued in the role I play helping students become the best therapists they can be,” said Ms. Merhaut. “I have met so many wonderful students along the way. What a win it has been for them and for me.”
