This week the History Consortium received exciting news: “The Western Pennsylvania Disability History and Action Consortium has been selected to receive the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities’ 2019 Hervey B. Wilbur Historic Preservation Award. This award recognizes significant contributions to historic preservation of the archives of the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or the Association. The Consortium is being recognized for its efforts to preserve and honor the struggle of people with disabilities to attain human and civil rights.”
The Consortium would like to thank every person and organization in Western Pennsylvania involved in this important work, preserving and sharing critical materials and stories that otherwise would have been lost. A special thanks to our nominators, Bob Nelkin and Joyce Bender, to our Executive and Steering Committee Members and to our closest partners in this effort, Senator John Heinz History Center, ACHIEVA and the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University. We are especially grateful for the continued support of the Edith L. Trees Charitable Trust, which has allowed us to build these important alliances and create resources where people can learn about can access this important history.
